Sole Street
SOLE STREET (Off the A227, five miles S of Gravesend)
The village of Sole Street is reached through tree-lined country roads, abruptly appearing on the other side of the humpiest of hump-back bridges.
It has a quirky village shop, bigger on the inside than outside, the Railway Inn and a handful of old cottages. Travel along Manor Road and more house appear. With a population of only about 1400, Sole Street is a mere speck on the rail map, but trains on the Bromley-to-Victoria line stop here every 15 minutes, with a pretty little station.
The village has Sweep's Hole, the village pond, a renowned beauty spot. Tucked away from the village street is Round Street, with its gentrified Victorian homes. Sallows Shaw is a modern estate, built in the 1970s amid willow woodland.
Parish village life revolves around the Meadow Room where clubs meet, and the Railway Inn.
