With thanks to Roger Hodge, Chairman, Cobham Amateur Dramatic Society "CADs"
During the 1920’s and 30’s the activities of the village were organised by a village club. It had its own hall, often referred to as The Hut, and also its own monthly magazine called ‘The Record of Cobham Village Club’. The first edition was for November 1923, price 2d. For the younger members of today’s society that is two pennies, or pence as it would have been called, and was equivalent to .8 of a p. today, without inflation.
It carried reports of everything that was going on in the village, parish council meetings, Cobham and Luddsdowne Women’s Institute, Cobham Girl Guides, the football, cricket, tennis and bowls clubs, CADS and snippets of other items of interest such as bereavements and the occasional wedding. The individual organisations were, of course, run independently but all were expected to contribute to the wellbeing of the Village Club. It seems the main way of doing this was to organise whist drives and dances in the Hut.
A diary of upcoming events was included each month and that for February 1930 is reprinted below.

The first editor of the magazine was Mr.W.W. Keene and he continued as editor until January 1929 when Mr. E White took over. The last issue was dated May 1934, still priced at 2d.
I, Roger Hodge, have had access to 63 editions of The Record which I have been able to copy. The grandson of Mr. E. White contacted CADS after visiting our website asking if we were interested in filling in any gaps in our record of old productions. We were. The magazine goes much further than just CADS, it is a spotlight on a way of village life which is long past and never to return. It is a historically significant document from the editorial to the advertisements.
There were 127 issues in all, we have 63 so there are another 64 to find. Do you have any of the blue covered magazine ‘The Record’ hidden away among old papers, in a box in the loft or at the back of the cupboard? If you do please let me know. Roger Hodge Chairman CADS (2014)
